Preparing for Mason preschool life

Posted on 01-14-2015

Making the transition from being at home to spending the day at a preschool can be quite a difficult period for both parent and child. There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and your toddler for the challenges that lie ahead. Below, we will take a closer look at some of the ways you can prepare your toddler for the early weeks of a preschool experience:

Start working on a routine early

Prepare yourself and your child for preschool by working on the routine you will be going through when your child begins attending. Start each day by getting yourself and your child ready as if you are heading off to school with your child. You can take it one step further by actually driving over to your chosen learning center. As you drive by the center point it out to your preschooler and say: “Look, that’s where you will be going next week! That’s your school!”

Teach your child about the power of organization

Preschool will require a lot more organization from your child than he or she has been used to at home. Obtain different colored baskets for the bedroom. Begin to teach your child to place certain objects into a certain colored basket. For example, use a green basket for Legos, a red basket for toy cars and a blue basket for dirty clothes. This exercise will help your child prepare for the organizational demands that preschool will present.

Make reassurances

If your child becomes restless or uneasy about having to leave your company for most of the day, provide him or her with assurances that you will be back at the end of the day. Create a goodbye routine, such as a high five or a hug and a kiss.
